Edmonton’s Last Old Growth Forests


When you think of an old growth forest, you may think of the California Redwoods or the ancient rainforests of Vancouver. However, the province of Alberta is home to some of the most unique old growth forests in Canada. In this article, I’ll be focusing on the Balsam Poplar forests of Edmonton river valley.

As shown in the photo above, the Edmonton River Valley used to be full of mature Balsam Poplar trees. Looking at our city today, that is no longer the case. Decades of urbanization and development have significantly altered the landscape of Edmonton’s river valley. significantly decreasing the amount of old growth forest.
